Glaucoma is a serious eye condition in which raised pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) damages the optic nerve, the nerve that carries images from the eye to the brain. If it is not treated in time, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

How glaucoma surgery is done

Glaucoma surgery lowers eye pressure by improving the drainage of fluid from inside the eye. Depending on your condition, the procedure may be:

  • trabeculectomy, which creates a new drainage channel for the fluid
  • a glaucoma drainage device, a small implant that helps fluid drain
  • minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).

The surgery is done under local anaesthesia and usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Recovery and aftercare

After surgery, use your eye drops exactly as prescribed, avoid straining your eyes and heavy physical activity, and protect the eye from injury and infection. Your follow-up visits matter too, because that is where we check your eye pressure regularly.
